Indigo Run

Indigo Run

When residents of Indigo Run were polled and asked to list their favorite amenity in the community, surprisingly, it wasn't the famous Jack Nicklaus-designed Golden Bear Golf Course named as one of Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine's Top 100 American Courses; or the private Golf Club at Indigo Run which earned a nod as Golf Digests Top New Courses when it opened in 1996. Their favorite benefit was not Sunningdale Park, a recreation center that includes a junior Olympic-size swimming pool,Har-Tru tennis courts, a volleyball court and playground. It wasn't even the fact that Indigo Run borders Broad Creek, making kayaking, crabbing, shrimping and fishing easily accessible to residents.

Their favorite amenity was simply - the people.

The more than 1700 acres that make up the gated plantation of Indigo Run was the final residential development on Hilton Head Island. One of the community's biggest selling points continues to be the contemporary feel of the neighborhoods and home design.

Drew Butler, with Charter I North Realty & Marketing, one of the top REALTOR's at Indigo Run says it is the newness of the home construction and the newer feel of the overall community that draws many buyers.

"I worked with a couple recently who liked the look of the homes," says Drew. "Knowing that all the homes are relatively new gave them the confidence of owning in Indigo Run in relation to its long-term value. Its location on the Island is also a benefit; you can get anywhere on Hilton Head Island in 10 minutes."
Golf
Areas of Indigo Run wrap around the famous Golden Bear Golf Course, designed by the Golden Bear himself Jack Nicklaus and his team. Regarded by many to be the quintessence of Hilton Head golf, the terrain is flat, and carved around ponds, marshes and forest areas.

Another course, The Golf Club at Indigo Run, is private and within the plantation. Its design marked the first teaming of Jack Nicklaus and his son Jack Nicklaus II.

According to Nicklaus,"The Golf Club at Indigo Run is my first co-design with my son Jackie, and our goal has been to create the best golf course on Hilton Head Island," he said. "Overall, the golf course is very traditional and the combination of our ideas has resulted in a course that's different from any I've designed before. The strategy and the green sites, in particular, make the Golf Club a challenging and enjoyable course for both tournament and member play."

Indigo Run is well-known for its golf, but many residents participate in other activities that make the development even more distinctive, from deep water access to one of the area's most respected tennis centers. Neighborhoods within the plantation are as diverse as the residents that make them up.

"The beauty is that you have five different enclaves to choose from, yet all a part of Indigo Run," says Drew.

Distinct Enclaves
Developers of Indigo Run clearly wanted to offer something for everyone. The Golden Bear is the largest of the five enclaves. While single family homes with locations on wooded lots or with golf course views dominate the neighborhood, there are a few patio homes. Broad Pointe homes are distinguished by marsh and lagoon views. This enclave also has a separate pool for residents. Within Broad Pointe is a marsh creek dock, suitable for launching kayaks or canoes. Some residents even use it for fishing or crabbing. The River Club is an intimate setting of just 50 homesites. Many of the homes have deepwater access or are second row lagoon homes. Several of the residences have their own private dock. The Golf Club is made up of over 250 homes. It is also a separate gated enclave within the already gated community making it extremely private.

For buyers interested in second homes that require little or no maintenance, the developers were thinking of them as well with their exclusive Berwick Green section. There is a combination of town homes, single family homes and club homes in this section, many located directly on the 10th and 18th hole of the Golden Bear Golf Course.

The People
"If success can be attributed," says Drew, "it would be to the enclaves and the people. The fact that they recently just expanded Indigo Hall, a gathering place for residents and many events, is a great testimony to the sense of community."

Not only are neighbors fond of one another, they have used their power as a community to help disabled and special needs children in the local area. Resident Mary Baumann working with Rose Fotia, another resident and co-founder of the Children's Relief Fund, launched a holiday card initiative that has raised more than $70,000 since it started seven years ago.
The concept is simple. Residents donate to the program the amount they would pay to send holiday cards to their friends and neighbors at Indigo Run. Each donor is listed on community cards and delivered to the over 750 residents by volunteers.

"Our first year we made $4000," says Mary. "Last year we raised $11,000." Money raised sent disabled and special needs kids to a six week art camp.

You Choose
With so many options within Indigo Run, residents can choose their level of involvement and amenities.

"It is an a la carte neighborhood,"adds Drew.

The collection of homes, activities and social interaction makes the plantation one of Hilton Head's most sought after neighborhoods.
