Life is beautiful at Belfair, but the golf is amazing!

Located centrally on the mainland just before Hilton Head Island, is one of the Lowcountry's most desirable communities. As you enter Belfair, you are greeted by The Avenue of The Oaks, two rows of century-old majestic trees marking the way into the 1,100 acre plantation. While there are numerous reasons to love the neighborhood, the biggest draw for most is its extraordinary 36 holes of golf.

"The main attraction is the golf," says Sales Agent Tom Jackson with Gateway Realty. "We have awardwinning, top-rated courses that are well-known across the country."

Belfair's West Course and East Course were designed by world-renown course architect Tom Fazio. According to Wikipedia, "Fazio is the only living designer with more credits on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek's collection of America's Best." He has been honored by Golf Digest as the Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect and is one of only two architects awarded the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America's Old Tom Morris Award, for his continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf.

With those credentials, it's not surprising that play at the courses at Belfair are sought after by amateurs and professionals alike. Both courses are defined by their natural beauty overlooking the Colleton River, with indigenous trees and colorful wildlife.

The Courses
The West Course opened in the fall of 1996 and was labeled, "the finest set of golf holes in the Lowcountry, if not on the East Coast," by LINKS magazine. Rolling terrain fairways, scalloped bunkers and manicured, elevated undulating greens describe the 18-hole, par-72 course with 7,080 total yards from the championship tees.

Not to rest on his laurels, Fazio seemingly outdid himself once again with the opening of the East Course three years later. Reminiscent of the links in Scotland, the par-71 course measures 6,959 from the championship tees and features numerous lakes and ponds integrated into the design. Both courses have garnered their share of awards and honors and are ranked in the top of Golfweek's list of America's Best Residential Courses.
Belfair was chosen in 2000 to host the Players Amateur Tournament. The winner of the event is given a coveted spot in the annual Verizon Heritage. Its first winner,Ben Curtis, went on to win the 2003 British Open.

Belfair also boasts the nation's best practice facility and learning center. According to Fazio, "It stands to reason that a world-class golf community such as Belfair should have a world-class learning center." The Feree Learning Center at Belfair includes four allweather hitting stalls each with fans and heating units, and equipped with video units and outdoor fans to deter insects; putting and chipping greens; practice bunkers; a 200-yard wide driving range; and a variety of target fairways.

Plantation Living
Yes, the golf is amazing at Belfair, but there are a few other benefits to living on the plantation. The charming cottages and elegant homes have been built by the Lowcountry's most prestigious builders and offer unique designs and upscale interiors. The neighborhoods include trees, brush and flowers that date back centuries. Preserved by developers, they continue to adorn the community. Also located on the property is Hidden Lake, a 42-acre chain of freshwater lakes maintained by a conservancy that has been classified by the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service as one of the more significant colonial wading bird rookeries in South Carolina.
For those who love to be active, the Belfair Club provides all the enjoyments of sports, dining and water activities. Dining is varied from casual to fine, with the periodic oyster roast event. The Clubs activity center includes fitness areas, pools and tennis with six Har-Tru courts. There are even two laser-leveled extraordinarily beautiful championship croquet courts surrounded by live oaks with views of the Colleton River marshes.

New homes at Belfair are available as well as resales. If you are interested in building, lots begin at $100,000. While youre waiting to build, visit Belfair as often as you like and rent one of the Club's cottages.
